La gimnasia rítmica surge como deporte en la década de los 30, en la Unión República Socialistas Soviéticas. Este deporte, creado originalmente de forma exclusiva para la mujer, tiene sus antecedentes históricos en los movimientos y sistemas gimnásticos que con diversos sistemas surgen en el siglo XVIII en toda Europa Occidental.

La gimnasia rítmica moderna se desarrolló a finales de la década de 1950. En el año 1963, fue organizado en Budapest el primer Torneo Internacional de Gimnasia Rítmica. Un año más tarde este Torneo Internacional de Budapest fue oficialmente declarado como el primerCampeonato Mundial de Gimnasia Rítmica. La primera campeona mundial de gimnasia rítmica fue Ludmila Savinkova, de la Unión Soviética. En el año 1975 fue formada la Comisión Técnica de la Gimnasia Rítmica. En 1983 se instituyó la Copa del Mundo de Gimnasia Rítmica.

En 1984 pasa a ser disciplina olímpica en los Juegos Olímpicos de Los Ángeles, donde ganó la canadiense Lori Fung, convirtiéndose en la primera campeona olímpica de la historia de la gimnasia rítmica deportiva en la modalidad individual.
